History
In the early 1800’s the anchorage and Maori village of Kororareka, became a European trading port without laws. Drunken sailors and prostitutes soon saw the town referred to as, “Hell Hole of the Pacific”
Missionaries from England and France arrived in the late 1830’s. Formal British law was established in 1840 by the establishment of a treaty signed across the bay at Waitangi. This period saw the Russell region briefly established as the Capital of New Zealand.
The first land wars of New Zealand occurred in Russell during 1845. The area between the entrance of the wharf and nearby Christ’s Church, became a battleground between British garrison andNgapuhi maori under the leadership of Hone Heke.
